Chafee Staffs Up

Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee has hired Darcie Johnson, a fund-raising consultant who worked on his 2006 Senate race for his 2010 run for governor. Johnson works mostly for Republicans and has clients nationwide. She is a Vermont native whose father, Jim Johnson, is a veteran Vermont lobbyist who was a confidante of and fund-raiser for former Vermont U.S. Sen. James M. Jeffords.

Linc Chafee In NY Times

Linc Chafee in the Sunday New York Times with an op-ed piece criticizing both major parties for a lack of leadership, while touting the need for centrist pols running as independents. Chafee writes about the gridlock in the Senate and the problems in getting anything done in Washington.

Johnson & Wales University is holding a month-long exploration of Liberia that includes lectures, theater, film, book discussions and an art exhibit. Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee will speak on Monday, Feb. 1 at 5:30 at the campus admissions presentation room in the Yena Center, 111 Dorrance St., Providence. Chafee was a member of the 2003 Seate delegation that oversaw the first electrion held in Liberia after over 10 years of civil war.

The Chafee event is free and open to the public.

Atty. Gen. Patrick Lynch lambasted former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee's proposal that Rhode Island consider a sales tax increase to close the state's yawning budget deficit. Lynch said that Chafee's proposal ``is wrongheaded at best'' and would add to the tax burden ``of the people who need help the most in these difficult times.''

WARWICK_ Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee, announcing his candidacy for governor, pledged to be the champion of property taxpayers and to move the state's foundering economy forward while protecting state education and public services.

In a substantive speech at a Warwick hotel, Chafee became the first major candidate to announce his candidacy. The onetime Republican will run as an independent.   ``I know there are bright days ahead for Rhode Island,'' he said.

Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee, running as an independent for governor, dipped into his family's deep pockets to raise the most campaign cash  in the fourth quarter of 2009 among the three top Rhode Island gubernatorial candidates.

Chafee, a Republican-turned-independent, harvested $241,521 in campaign money in the period that ends today, according to J.R. Pagliarini, Chafee's camopaign manager. But all but $41,521 of that total came from he and wife Stephanie Danforth Chafee's personal fortune, Pagliarini confirmed.

Providence native-turned-DC bigfoot Tad Devine gets the nod from Lincoln Chafee. Chafee, btw, is slated to appear this evening (with yours truly) on RI-PBS' A Lively Experiment and this weekend on WPRI/WNAC-TV's Newsmakers.

Devine is also representing Massachusetts Treasurer Tim Cahill, who's running for governor as an independent.

The Rhode Island gubernatorial election is more than a year away, but the three top candidates have been aggressively raising money. Once again in the year's third quarter, General Treasurer Frank Caprio leads the pack.

With 16 months until our next gubernatorial election, former ProJo staffer Mark Arsenault yesterday, via the Boston Globe, assessed Lincoln Chafee's independent bid for the office.

On the plus side is the Chafee persona:

John Holmes Jr., former Rhode Island Republican Party chairman, believes Chafee has a chance to make history as an independent.
