Rep. Ray Sullivan, a leader among young Rhode Island House Democrats, is leaving the House and taking a job as deputy district director of government affairs for U.S. Rep. James Langevin.
Sullivan, 33, is well-respected among Democrats for his political savvy; he was campaign director for Barack Obama's campaign in Rhode Island. Before that he worked for Myrth York's 2002 campaign for governor. Sullivan is also a former journalist.
Sullivan was first elected to the House in 2004. He represents eastern Coventry and a slice of West Greenwich. The district is anchored by the Coventtry neighborhoods of Anthony, Mishnock, Tiogue, Wood Estates, Hopkins Hill and Mishnock.
Sullivan will start in Langevin's office on March 1. He will remain in the House for the remainder of the current session, but will not be running for reelection. Langevin also announced that his veteran press secretary, Joy Fox, is being promoted to Deputy District Director for Communications and Community Outreach.
``I am delighted that Joy and Ray have decided to take these leadership positions in my office serving the constituents of Rhode Island's Second Congressional District,'' said Langevin.
Sullivan, who worked for Langevin when he was secretary of state, said he is excited about the new position. ``I started my career with him. He's someone who got into politics and public service for all the right reasons.''
